Ship history: Indefatigable was launched in 1633 at Deptford Dockyard on the Thames, and served originally as part of King Charles's fleet for over ten years. In 1645 she rallied to the cause of Oliver Cromwell and the Parlimentarians, and participated in ferrying soldiers to Ireland in 1647. Richard Fairfax became her captain in 1649, and was promoted to Commodore after Indefatigable participated in the Battle of Plymouth and was noted for excellence. When Cromwell decided to invade Spanish-held Jamaica to gain a Commonwealth hold in the Caribbean, Fairfax and the Indefatigable seemed the natural choice to lead the English fleet over the Atlantic.
